Sailing Safety Checks Before You Sail! (Learn to Sail Like a Pro)

You are outbound for a perfect sail on a perfect day. Have you checked these seven often-missed pieces of sailing gear? Better do it now, skipper!

Have you checked your small sailboat for sailing for the day, the week, or a month? When you learn to sail, you will need to know just what it takes to make sailing safer and more fun. Add these seven often-forgotten sailing tips to your pre-sail checklist to make sure you are ready to sail!

1. Check your Cotters for Integrity

Look over those nautical bobby-pins called "cotter-pins". Every part of your sailing running rigging has these fittings that pin the rig together. If one fails, your mast could come tumbling down too. Start at the bow and work aft. Check headsail furling gear, stay and shroud end swage fittings, lifeline turnbuckles and gates, boom vang blocks, traveler gear, and mainsheet fittings.

2. Tape Lifeline Gates for Security

Do your lifelines have turnbuckles for end fittings--or the more dangerous pelican hooks. Don't put too much faith in a bail to keep the pelican hook in place. Tape the hook to the sleeve for a more secure, seaworthy fitting.

3. Lead Lines Smooth and Fair

Start at the bow and work aft. Check the lead on the headsail furling drum line back to the cockpit. Then return to the bow and check the Genoa sheet leads from the clew back to the sheet or turning blocks. Make sure that each Genoa sheet leads at an upward angle from the block to the primary sheet winch. This will prevent overrides (jams) and big headaches later on.

Find The Best Car Rental Firm Offering Discount Coupons

Renting a car by using rental car coupons is a great opportunity, especially for travelers who visit other cities or countries and need to get around with a car. There are a lot of coupon offers given by rental car companies that you can find on the Internet. Simply use a search engine and you will find many car rental firms offering coupons. However, the problem with using a search engine is that you will find too many such offers. This can be confusing as it is difficult to know which deal is the best one for you. In order to come up with the one that suits your needs, here are a few tips that you can follow.

First of all, you can look for rentals on travel agency websites. There are several well- known travel agencies that you can try. They will help you determine which auto rental company offers the best price. Some of the travel agencies allow you to request coupons during searching, so that you will find the ones with a lower price. If you already are a regular customer of a big car rental provider, you can request a direct upgrade, as many companies provide a very good deal for their loyal customers by using coupons. Another way of finding the best rental car coupons is by joining a car fan club or travel forum on the Internet. Forum members often know which rental companies have the best deals, and of course, the best coupon offers. A travel forum will be even more beneficial to you as the participants have had the same experience as you, going to other cities or countries and renting cars using coupons. Some might have had a good experience with certain car firms or some might have a bad experience with others. You can make a note which car rental company seems best from those experiences.

Here Explain Camping and My Favorite Campfire Recipe

As an avid camper, I have spent quite a bit of time beneath the stars, warming my hands before a roaring campfire. I am amazed when I meet someone in my other business travels that are from a large city and have never had the opportunity to go camping and sit beneath a beautiful starlit night. One can try their best to explain it, but words can never paint that picture.

As you might imagine, I watched countless times as my mother lovingly prepared our nightly meal in a cast iron pot which hung neatly above the orange glow of flames. The travel trailers we camped in have changed a lot since I was a kid, but my mom's recipes never did. Our first camper had no water heater, air conditioner, or microwave. Now, our Dutchmen travel trailer has all of those things, and much, much, more. Yes, the travel trailers have been improved through many changes. My mom's recipes however, are still the same old recipe. There was no way to improve them in my humble opinion. These camping years taught me numerous camping recipes. I would like to share with you one of my favorites, which is called Doritos Delight.

Kerala, a tiny state in South India, is often referred to as 'God's own country'. What is there to this state so that it got such a name, you might wonder. Well, you will certainly get your answer when you are visiting the place. The locales, the culture, the traditions, everything will make you repeat the famous tourism slogan, "Kerala- God's own Country".

The state of Kerala lies sandwiched between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. The breadth of the state is just about 150 kms. Within this landscape there are highlands, midlands, and lowlands. The tallest peak of the region is about 3 km above sea level (Anaimudi, Idukki district) while some places in Kuttanad (Alappuzha district) are actually below sea level. The variety in the geography is the prime reason for Kerala to be one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the world.

The major hill stations in Kerala are Munnar, Wayanad, Ponmudi, and Wagamon. There are tea plantations through the mountains of these hill stations. Tea production in Kerala was begun by the Britishers who ruled here. There are numerous waterfalls and some major dams in the hill stations. Travelling through the Ghat roads to these places will be an amazing experience. If you are not in a car but on a public transport bus, the adventure increases.

Kerala has a coastline of 600 kms and fishing is a major source of income for the locals. There are many beaches in Kerala running through the length of the state. The most famous ones are Kovalam, Shankhumugham, Veli, Fort Kochi, Beypore, Kappad, Thalassery and Cherai.

There are many historical monuments in Kerala. You can see shades of architectural styles from all over the world in these buildings. For example, the Hill Palace in Ernakulam has traces of Dutch and British architectures. Some of the temples are built using styles from all over India.

Solutions To Organise a Trip to Goa on a Budget

Goa is a very popular destination among young travellers and those on a budget, and it's not hard to see why. While it boasts idyllic beaches and crystal-clear waters, it is one of the most affordable of all exotic locations.

Indeed, cheap holidays to Goa are easy to come by and the first thing to do to ensure that you don't break the bank is to look for a hotel that offers good value for money.

There are several resorts in this vibrant coastal area of India, as tourists come here in droves looking for some respite from the cities' heat and somewhere to relax on the country's beautiful golden beaches.

Due to its high population of holidaymakers, competition between hotels is high, which means that you're likely to find inexpensive places to stay during your trip.

In order to make sure that you get the best value for money, you might want to look for hotels that are close to the beach. This way you are able to save on transport, if you plan to spend most of your time reclining on the shoreline. However, be careful that your hotel doesn't charge a premium for being in a prime location.

You may want to check the cost-effectiveness of staying somewhere that also offers food as part of its packages. If you think you'd eat at the hotel restaurant most nights, this could be an ideal option for you.

Alternatively, you're sure to find that you are able to fill yourself up on the delicious offerings at food stalls and markets located all around the region. Not only are these dishes available at very low prices, but they also give you the chance to sample authentic Goan cooking at its best.

When you are lying on the sand, you will be able to have a taste of the region's cuisines as you're likely to be greeted by stallholders walking along the beach, trying to tempt holidaymakers with the delicious scents of curries and spices.

Choose a Guest House in India

India is a land of diversities. It has a nice blend of the old and the new. And the same holds true for accommodations as well. There are luxury accommodations as well as budget accommodations to choose from here. The budget accommodations in India include the guesthouses, the B&Bs, the home stays etc.

If you are traveling on a budget and looking to book a guesthouse in India, there are a few things you should keep in mind before making a booking:

1. Location- Always take note of the location of a guesthouse in India. There are guesthouses here which are located in shady places which must be avoided at all costs. While booking a guest-house, it is always better to book one in a residential area or one near the market place, as it gives easy accessibility to the transport of the city.

2. Type of accommodation- This is another factor to be taken into account before finalizing a best guesthouse in India. There are hotels in the country which just offer an air conditioned accommodation, while others offer an air conditioned accommodation along with breakfast. There are still others which offer a fully furnished serviced apartment to stay in. The one you settle on depends on your requirements and your personal choice. For example- if you planning to stay long in the city, it is always advisable to go for a guest house in India which offers serviced apartments as they offer the comfort of a home.

3. Amenities- This factor should also be taken into account while choosing a guest house in India. The various amenities present in the guest house can be seen on its website, if it has a website, or it could be seen on various travel portals which have the description of various guest -houses in the country. The more amenities the guesthouse has, the better it is.

Sharing Pilot Headsets With Fellow Fliers

Aviation headphones are essential items for facilitating clear communications in general aviation (GA) aircraft. For maximum benefit, pilots should be sure to use a high quality model that will perform well in the rigors of the cockpit. An advantageous way to secure a capable earset is to share the cost with fellow aviators.

Sharing pilot headsets makes sense for a number of reasons. By dividing the expense, each user saves money and increases the utilization of any model(s) purchased. Splitting headset costs also allows users to purchase a higher quality model than any one of them might be able to afford alone. Earphone sharing is a plausible option if you're part of a flying club or involved in a plane partnership. It might also make sense if you have family members, friends, or roommates who are GA fliers. For those beginning flight training, it might be wise to split a headset with a fellow student pilot as a way to control costs. Regardless of your exact situation, set up a few ground rules regarding headset sharing as a means to keep the arrangement peaceful and realistic.

Keep it Clean: When sharing a headset, be sure to keep it clean for your fellow users. This means wiping away any sweat, oils, hair, or other unpleasantries after each flight. In most cases, a damp cloth will do the trick. For female fliers, make sure you don't leave any lipstick on the mic or makeup on the ear seals. Spend just a few minutes cleaning off the headset and your fellow pilots will appreciate the effort.

For ANR Models: For active noise reduction (ANR) headsets, the surest way to cause problems is to leave dead or dying batteries in the electronic noise cancelling (ENC) unit. If you notice any batteries are on their way out, go ahead and replace them for the next user. While you're at it, make sure you contribute your fair share to the purchase of spare batteries. The last thing you want to do is incite an argument by forcing someone else to supply all the batteries. If necessary, devise a chart to track who should purchase the next round of spares. For wireless headsets, be sure to recharge the battery components when they're low on power. Be thoughtful of your fellow users and they'll more than likely return the favor.

Fly Multiple Planes? If you and your pilot pals operate more than one aircraft, devise a scheduling system for the use of each earset. Decide on a mutually accessible place to store your headphones and give as much notice as possible to avoid scheduling conflicts. In the event that a scheduling conflict arises, decide on a priority system (checkride, IFR, cross-country, etc.) when setting up your sharing arrangements. Above all, have respect for other users and be as considerate as possible when scheduling headset use.

Travel On International Flights In Times Of Heightened Security Concerns?

There has been heightened security worldwide ever since the terrorist attacks on the US using the airplanes. As a result of these enhanced security measures, the international travelers are subjected to extensive security checks before boarding the international flights. The international travelers are required to follow certain set guidelines and procedures so that they do not get into trouble at the airport.

The first important thing is to check for the rules and procedures that are laid down by the airlines. These can be known from their website or information brochures. These rules essentially pertain to the items that are allowed or not allowed to be carried aboard the airplane. Further, there are variations in these rules from one country to the other. Therefore, it is the airlines which provide the correct and the most updated information on the rules and procedures to be followed while boarding the international flights to a particular destination. Additionally, you can even check out the website of the destination country's authorities which can provide this information. The items that now stand banned mostly relate to all those items which can be used as a potential weapon for creating panic or hurting any person or even damaging the aircraft. So, even the knives, toy guns, box cutters and other items of common usage are banned from carrying in the airplane. If you still carry these items, there are chances that the same might be confiscated.

Another important aspect is that due to increase in the security checks, the passengers are required to come for check-in a few hours before the flight time which is mentioned in the international air ticket. There is no easy passing through the security levels anymore. So, you need to come well in time to allow for the security checks and be patient during the whole exercise.

How To Mistakes to Avoid on a Day Hike

1. Don't tell someone where you're going

If you've seen the movie 127 hours, you know that this is never a good idea. No matter what your relationship with family and friends, always tell someone you trust where you're going, for how long and when you expect to be back.

2. Don't bring extra food, water and layers

A lot of hikers hesitate to bring extra clothing, food and water because of the extra weight. Many reason that they will only be gone a few hours, so why bother? I have also been guilty of doing this myself, preferring to go pack less on trails I know well. However, anyone who's been lost will tell you that you'll appreciate these extras in an emergency. A thin down jacket and toque pack down so small, are so light but super warm. It's hard to find an excuse not to bring them! Don't want to bring a backpack? Fanny packs are a styling alternative!

3. Don't bring and emergency shelter or blanket.

If you get lost on a hike, something that can happen more quickly than you would expect, you will be so glad you threw one of these in your pack!! Very lightweight, they keep you warm and boost your morale, which helps you make better decisions if you have to hunker down somewhere for the night.

4. Leave the trail.

Don't do it, for any reason, even to take a shortcut. This is the main reason people get lost in the wilderness. In the mountains, be extra careful about staying on trail because every dip and animal run looks like it might lead somewhere.

5. Leave your cell behind.

Surprisingly, hikers sometimes leave their phones at home or in the car at the trail head. Some assume they won't get coverage, others hike to get away from 'it all', so why bring a phone? While I can understand the reasoning for both, I always bring my cell phone just in case. Cell coverage extends farther than we think. On several occasions I've been able to call home from a mountaintop! Turn it off if you don't want it ringing on the trail (which has also happened to me, pretty embarrassing) but DO bring it! If you get lost, it can help search and rescue pinpoint your exact location, making your rescue much faster.

What's In A Number? (Hotel Star Ratings)

Since the invention of Trip Advisor, it seems most of us would rather rely on the opinions of other travellers who have "been there, done that", than the number of stars listed by a hotel name.

Why, well, every country seems to have its own star rating system and what one country deems a four-star hotel, another may well rate a 2-star property - so how do we know we are getting what we are paying for?

Social media outlets that offer advice and opinions are all well and good, but just because one traveller didn't like the colour of the wallpaper, or thought the orange juice at breakfast was slightly sour, doesn't necessarily mean the hotel is bad, and we have to accept that the review may well have been written by a competitor. So, we really need to read between the lines, and combine the hotel star rating with an overview of all opinions to get a better idea of what the property is really like.

After travelling to over 40 countries, I truly believe you get what you pay for, and while I understand everyone has a travel budget, I don't understand why someone would book a 2-star hotel when they are used to, and expect the luxurious amenities they have at home! It doesn't work like that...

Like most people I enjoy staying in five-star properties, but they can be very expensive, and unless you are going to spend a great deal of time in your hotel room or using the hotel facilities, then they are often not worth the investment. I prefer to save these hotels for special occasions such as anniversaries, birthday treats or romantic beach breaks, when we really make the most of the luxurious rooms, great facilities and five-star service.

We generally opt for four-star hotels where you get all the little luxuries you are used to at home such as quality bed linens, tastefully decorated rooms, clean bathrooms and electrical goods, without the pomp and ceremony offered by five-star hotels.

In most European countries, three-star hotels are decent properties with nice rooms, adequate facilities, and are therefore perfect for a weekend city break, but when you compare the prices of a three-star hotel with a four-star, you will probably find that there isn't much between them, so location may be your deciding factor.
